Stop re-pulling Census, BLS, CDC, HUD, Zillow and 103 other sources. One code, one call, and the version you used stays on file.

DataSpine is the sourced record of every place in the United States: 859 attributes in nine categories, economics to food, from 108 live public sources, joined on one code across 331,007 geographies from the nation to the block group, with the source and the vintage kept on every value. Run by SuperTruth.

Health is one of the nine categories. The fifteen county figures the Gauntlet runs on come from it; the other 844 attributes arrive the same way.

Built for any team that pulls public figures by hand today, or takes a number from a model that cannot say where it came from.

Which places

331,007 geographies, from the nation down to the block group.

The Census hierarchy is the spine. Every place carries its FIPS code, so a county joins to its state and its tracts without a crosswalk. The county is the richest level today; figures reach the tract wherever the source publishes there.

LevelPlacesWhat is on file
Nation1The container for the hierarchy; national figures arrive as sources publish them
States and territories55About 280 attributes each, including the state profiles Live or Die Here runs on
Counties3,142Up to 936 values on file across 859 attributes and their vintages; 2,911 counties hold all fifteen county-lane figures
Census tracts85,396About 100 attributes where the source publishes at tract level (Census ACS, CDC PLACES)
Block groups242,336Geographic units on file; figures arrive as sources publish at this level

Counts from the spine's geographic units, 30 Aug 2026. ZIP codes are not a level; a county-to-ZIP crosswalk is on the roadmap.

Coverage is not uniform and we show it. Of 3,142 counties, 2,911 hold all fifteen of the county-lane figures, 198 are missing one (the primary care ratio), 32 hold between nine and thirteen, and one dissolved Alaska borough holds none. Counted 7 Sep 2026 against the live spine. A comparison to the state or the nation appears only where that reference figure is on file.

Every county shaded by the figures it holds. Counted 7 Sep 2026.

all 15 14 1 to 13 0

Where each number comes from

Every value arrives with its source and its year. Here is one, exactly as the API returns it.

One row for Philadelphia County

{
  "geoId": "42101",
  "geoName": "Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania",
  "attribute": "chr_diabetes_pct",
  "value": 12.3,
  "display": "12.3%",
  "source": "County Health Rankings",
  "vintage": "2024"
}

A figure the source does not hold, as this page shows it

{
  "geoName": "Glades County, Florida",
  "attribute": "chr_primary_care_ratio",
  "value": null,
  "display": "not on file"
}

The figure is the source's own. County Health Rankings, SAHIE and BRFSS publish model-based estimates; that is what a county-level survey is. DataSpine keeps their number unmodified and unblended, and names the source and the year beside it. Nothing here is an estimate of ours.

A missing figure says so. 198 counties return “not on file” for the primary care ratio. A null is never dressed as a zero.

Gaps can be filled, and a filled value says that too. Where a source holds no figure for a place, DataSpine fills from the nearest published geography that holds it: county air quality from its metro monitor, for example. On request it generates synthetic households and populations from the place's own published distributions. A filled value is labeled filled and is never counted among the sourced figures on this page.

Versions stay on file. A value is unique on place, attribute and vintage. The house price index holds 51 vintages for one county; ask for ?vintage=2022 and you get 2022's answer, next year and the year after.

Test it

Test it where you already know the answer.

Pick the county you know best. Fifteen figures come back live, each with its source and its year. The Gauntlet on the homepage runs on this same spine.

Teal dots are the Gauntlet's benchmark counties. Click a state, then a county.

Why not pull it yourself

The data is free. The joining, the versions and the provenance are the product.

Every source in the catalog can be downloaded by anyone. Teams that do it once rarely do it twice, for reasons that are boring and expensive. These are the ones DataSpine absorbs.

The shapes do not match

County Health Rankings publishes a rate as a fraction; CDC PLACES publishes the same measure as a whole percent. SVI is a percentile; SAIPE is a percent; a primary care ratio is stored as physicians per resident and read as residents per physician. DataSpine stores every value with its unit and scale and returns them on one footing.

The keys do not match

One source keys on FIPS, another on county name, a third on a metro code. Names collide (there are eight Washington Counties in Pennsylvania's neighbors alone) and drift (a dissolved Alaska borough). DataSpine resolves every source to the Census hierarchy once, so your join is one column.

Last year's number disappears

Agencies overwrite files in place. A figure you cited in a board deck may not exist at its URL a year later. DataSpine keeps every vintage it ingests, 51 for the house price index. The number you used is retrievable, and so is the one that replaced it.

Refresh is somebody's job

Redfin publishes weekly, ACS yearly, the Religion Census once a decade. DataSpine refreshes each source on its own cadence, runs a weekly source audit, and shows the cadence and last vintage in the catalog above. That job stops being yours.

A null is not a zero

Census uses sentinel values such as -666666666 for suppressed cells. Left in, one Texas county can silently set every other county's score to 100. DataSpine strips sentinels and returns “not on file” where the source holds nothing, or a labeled filled value where you have asked for one.

It answers in the time a page loads

A county's full record returns usually in about 200 milliseconds. Measured p50 152 ms, p95 176 ms on 7 Sep 2026. Fast enough to sit inside a clinical dashboard or an agent's reply, not only in a nightly batch.

How it arrives

Your record meets the county record on one code.

Nothing of yours leaves your walls. You send a geography code; DataSpine returns the place's figures with source and year on each. Join them to your records, your model or your dashboard on the same code.

  1. 01

    Your record

    A patient, a member, a site. Stays with you.

  2. 02

    County code

    42101. FIPS, or a name the search resolves.

  3. 03

    DataSpine row

    value · source · vintage, for 800+ attributes.

  4. 04

    Your model or dashboard

    Joined on the code. Cited by source and year.

The API

  • GET /geo/search?q=&type=county|state|tract
  • GET /geo/{geoId}
  • GET /geo/{geoId}/attributes?vintage=&category=
  • GET /geo/{geoId}/children?type=county
  • POST /geo/batch
  • POST /query/filter
  • GET /data?select=sources|attribute-catalog|freshness
  • POST /synthetic/households · on request, labeled synthetic

Bearer key, JSON in and out, every row carrying source and vintage. Batch up to eight counties per call for a full record each, or filter the country on a set of attributes in one request. Webhooks fire when a source is onboarded or the serving set is refreshed.

Sandbox key for developers → Read-only county figures. No patient data is needed to try it.

Where it sits

Data Trust Index™ scores your record. DataSpine supplies the place.

SuperTruth proves a health record is sourced, consented, current and scored before anyone acts on it. The DTI engine does the scoring. DataSpine is the context layer beside it: the same trust rules, applied to the public record of the place a record belongs to: a patient, a member, a branch, a store. The intake step maps your data to it. VIOLET reads it for the geography around a condition. The Truth Agent in the corner of this site may not state a county figure without a DataSpine row behind it. SuperTruth runs the service.

What it will not do

Five things DataSpine refuses, on purpose.

  • It holds no person. Every value describes a place. There is no patient, member or household record in it, and none is needed to use it.
  • It adds no estimate of its own. A sourced figure is the source's figure. Anything filled or generated is labeled and kept apart from the sourced count.
  • It will not compare what it does not hold. No “above the national average” unless the national figure is on file for that attribute.
  • It draws no trend or cause. Determinants sit alongside outcomes. The reading is yours.
  • It never dresses a null as a zero. “Not on file” is an answer.

Who relies on it

Paid work runs on these rows. Four things read from them every day, and we hold all four to the same rule.

Outside this site, DataSpine sits under paid work in banking, payments and media, delivered through Artists & Robots.

  • The Gauntlet on the homepage has answered its six county-health questions live from DataSpine since the site launched on 6 Sep 2026. Recorded competitor answers cite no source; ours cite one every time.
  • The Truth Agent on this site is bound by a written rule: “If no DataSpine block is present, you must not state any specific numeric statistic for a geography. Not from memory, not an estimate.”
  • VIOLET, in live clinical use, reads the geography around a condition from it.
  • Live or Die Here, a consumer site on state taxes and cost of living, runs its 55 state profiles and county explorer on it.
